“The moving magnet produces a current around the copper tube. This current loop sets up a magnetic field that opposes the change in the magnetic field, so the magnet falls more slowly.
Some of the magnet’s “lost” kinetic energy is returned to it when it exits, and its south(or N) pole sees another short-lived south pole. Some energy has gone into resistive heating of the tube.”
